COMMUNITY SERVICES
This program includes a number of services
designed to improved the client household’s overall quality of life. These
services are based at our neighborhood or community service centers which are
the principal point of entry for our services. Several sources of funding are
incorporated into this program. Listed below are the major services provided.
Commodity Food Distribution.
This program provides food commodities to
households that meet established income guidelines. Food commodities are
purchased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture from American farmers and are
provided to each state for distribution. In Georgia, the Department of Human
Resources is the designated agency to coordinate this distribution process.
Distribution varies from semi-annually to quarterly, based on funding.
Emergency Assistance. Emergency
Assistance takes on many forms depending on the nature of the problem. In
most cases, it involves the need for food, clothing, prescriptions, shelter
assistance, or utility assistance. This program is possible through a variety
of grants and gratuities from churches, clubs, individuals, non-profit
organizations such as the United Way, and occasionally the State, Federal, and
County Governments. Generally these are short term services rather than long
term and are intended to resolve a critical situation in the home.
Energy Assistance.
This program provides a one time annual heating assistance payment for eligible
low income families. These funds are available during the winter season each
year and are provided through the Georgia Department of Human Resources. This
program also contains a crisis component when sufficient funding is
available.
Food Bank.
This program provides for the immediate food needs of families through the
distribution of donated pantry-type foods. Some non-consumable items
such as diapers may also be available. Distribution of foods is made
possible through private donations and a grant received by the Department of
Human Resources.
Information and Referral.
This service, provided at the service centers, informs clients about assistance
available from other public and private agencies in the community.
Counseling.
Counseling services are provided to address a broad spectrum of problems that
may be impacting a family. These services may include, but are not limited to
home management, budgeting, energy conservation and mortgage counseling..
Indigent Patient Advocate
This program
assists individuals in applying directly to pharmaceutical companies for free
medication. It is geared toward individuals who are generally on
maintenance medications and who have no prescription insurance.
Housing Counseling.
This program provides counseling to individuals and families following area:
Pre-Occupancy, Mortgage Default, Rent Delinquency, Post Purchase/Post Occupancy,
Home Improvement and Rehabilitation Counseling, Displacement and Relocation,
Homebuyer Education, and Predatory Lending. Counseling is provided in group
sessions and individual sessions. Counseling is made possible through a grant
