Neal I met a little girl named Chloe Becker actually before she was born. Chloe has a cousin by the name of Dalton, who was a student in my class. Chloe’s mother, Dalton’s aunt, picked Dalton up when she was pregnant with Chloe. After Chloe was born, she would come with her grandmother to pick up her cousins, Dalton and Trevor. We watched Chloe’s progress as well as the progress of another cousin who was about her same age. I guess around the age of 6 months Chloe’s Development slowed down. We watched as her muscle tone changed and she just seemed to stop growing. Chloe was now smaller than her cousin by about 2-3 months; we, the staff at Jones Head Start, were constantly offering suggestions of places to seek assistance with her health issues. Malissa Smith, Chloe’s Mother, was seeking assistance from anyone and everyone that would help her. Chloe turned 3 and came to Head Start as a student. Ms. Smith was given several diagnoses for Chloe. She has Autism, was hearing impaired, had sensory disorder, Leukoencephalopathy, and hypotonia .Chloe has been in the class with Ms. Stephanie Tolbert and myself for one school term. We feel that Chloe has made great gains. The children all assist with her and help her in any way possible. Chloe was screened to receive services through the BOE. Ms. Smith refused stating that she did not feel that Chloe would thrive as she did in her regular Head Start Classroom. I asked the BOE to leave Chloe with us and serve her in a main-stream classroom and they did. Chloe continues to progress in her Head Start classroom and we will continue to do what we have to keep her thriving because we at JONES HEAD START LOVE HER! |
We
Love Our Volunteers
The
Telfair County football team (to the right) and coach came to the rescue for Heart of
Georgia’s commodities distribution in Telfair when the county detail canceled
at the last minute. Heart of Georgia
is so grateful for their assistance
and community involvement.
This
story was front page news in The Telfair Enterprise on August 12, 2009.
Whitney
Ellis (to
the left) is a Senior at Warner
Robins High School. She is 17 years old and a volunteer
that helps with Commodities Distribution in Warner Robins. Whitney is also
active in
school, where she is in Chorus and All-State Chorus, all while working on a dual
seal diploma. She also works part time at a McDonald's in Perry.
Recently, Whitney was asked about her volunteer efforts.
Question:
Why
do you volunteer?
Answer:
It's
fun and I like to do it.
Question:
Where
do you volunteer at?
Answer:
When
school is out, I help with commodity distributions.
Also, this summer, I
was
an assistant coach with the Warner Robins Rec. Dept.
I also volunteer at a local retirement home by helping out with a lady
resident.
Question:
When
do you volunteer?
Answer:
Whenever
I am needed, but when I am out of school it is easier for me.
Question:
How do you feel about volunteering?
Answer:
It's fun and I get a chance to meet new people. I also like hanging out with my
Aunt Terri (Perry and Twiggs County Developer). It is also good for college.
Perry Commodities saw local Wal-Mart volunteers help out. Some of the volunteers are pictured below.
During
the last Commodities Distribution in Perry, Wal-Mart donated $1,500. The
donation was the result of a Wal-Mart program. In this program, when Wal-Mart
employees donate a certain amount of time to a particular cause, Wal-Mart
Corporation donates money to the organization.
Energy
Assistance Program Opens
Georgia’s regular Energy
Assistance Program will open November 2, 2009, for the homebound and elderly (65
years of age or older) households, and on December 1, 2009 for all other
eligible households. The program
provides financial assistance to low-income,
elderly and handicapped households to help pay their home heating costs.
However, emergency assistance may be available to those who have been
disconnected or are in danger
of disconnection.
Households
participating in the program must meet income criteria and be responsible for
the cost of heating their homes.
To be eligible, households must have an income equal to or less than 60
percent of the state median income guidelines - $21,458 for a one-person
household, $28,061 for two people, $34,663 for three people, $41,266 for four
people, $47,868 for five people, $54,471 for six people, $55,709 for seven
people, or
$56,947 for eight people.
Payments
will be made primarily by checks to home energy suppliers for gas, electricity,
wood, coal, or kerosene used in heating a home.
The one-time payments will average about $345 per household.
Applicants
should contact their local Neighborhood
Service Center or Community Service Center
to make an appointment or for more information.
The program will close when funds are depleted.
Applicants
should have proof of income for the last 30 days for all household members.
This proof may be a paycheck stub, or a letter granting public
assistance, Social Security, or unemployment benefits.
Applicants must also have the social security numbers of all household
members 18 years or older (proof of age will also need to be provided during the
month of November), and their most recent utility or fuel bill.
Households
whose fuel costs are included in their rent are ineligible for assistance.
