A Letter From Nancy Smith
Executive Director
2009

This has been an extraordinary year. The economic downturn hit Georgia hard and that effect trickled down to our agency and to our clients. State funding of our service programs has all but disappeared. The agency had to reduce services and lay off long standing employees. That was tough.

Our agency has seen our clients sink lower and lower into poverty. We have seen clients who have never been in poverty before. Many of our employees have felt, first hand, the affect of this economy. Many of their spouses have lost their jobs. The economic downturn has affected families throughout the income spectrum.

Franklin Roosevelt led our nation during tough times not unlike what America is facing today. He said, "One thing is sure. We have to do something."

Beginning in 2009 with our new President, our agency proudly became a part of the Stimulus efforts to revitalize our economy. Although the funds didn’t arrive prior to the end of our fiscal year (May 31), extensive planning efforts took place to assure that we would be ready when the funds arrived.

We end the fiscal year with gratitude for a Board of Directors committed to our mission and supportive of our efforts in that regard.

We are so proud of our staff who has stepped up to the challenge in spite of having to work harder for no additional money. We are appreciative of our clients who have been patient through breaks in service due to funding problems. Through all the difficulties, this has been a good year.

Our agency looks forward to the tremendous challenge in the implementation of the Stimulus programs (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 2009). The fiscal strength of our agency and the dedication of our Board of Directors and our staff are the assets that will lead us through the Recovery.
